History of the Department of Civil Aviation

The Department of Civil Aviation has supported the development of air transport in Brunei Darussalam from early commercial air services to a modern aviation system.

Historical Background

Commercial air services were introduced in Brunei Darussalam in 1953 with air transport connections between Labuan, Bandar Seri Begawan, Anduki and Lutong in Sarawak.

These operations were based at the former Berakas Airfield, which was originally built on a wartime airstrip with a runway of approximately 3,000 feet.
